How do they come up with the themes?

So you have to write an entire movie based on just that?

Dunno. Names out of a hat probably…

I’m kinda stumped as to what to do. Good thing I’m not in this shootout heh

Dunno. Names out of a hat probably…

It might seem that way but the deciding the Theme is a very serious responsibility for us at the AAFilmLab.

Without going into detail, this year’s Theme had meetings of six people lasting up to five hours. (Would it be correct to say that’s 30 man-hours per meeting?) That’s not including each person doing their own independent brainstorming for Theme ideas beforehand. Meetings are spread out over several weeks. Each Theme idea is argued, defended or eliminated until a final Theme is determined best overall. Trust me, it is quite a feeling when the Theme is finally decided!

In fact, I would dare to say that when the Theme seems so randomly out of the hat, yet inspires such an amazing range of storytelling and creativity, is when we know we’ve gotten the Theme right!

Do you guys actually participate yourselves for fun?

How far ahead do you guys plan? It seems like so much work.

So now we know how, how about why? Why did you guys choose this theme?

How many teams are participating this year?

The Shootout is always in the works one way or another. In fact, this year’s Theme was the evolution of an idea from over a year ago.

That’s a question for every Team to find their own answer! ^_^

How many teams are participating this year?

46 Teams qualified for entry this year.

We’re looking forward to seeing each and every one of their films!

So many questions! haha

~_~ That’s no fair! Haha

Over a year ago? Wow, that’s a really long time! Do you guys get paid to do this?

40 teams? Omg doesn’t it take forever to watch?

Well they’re only 5 minutes long right?

Yeah or under. Anything over gets disqualified.

40 x 5 = 200 minutes. That’s a little over 3 movies.

That’s a lot of movies. They won’t announce the winners till July though so its not like they’re pressed for time, right?

They have to judge all of them too and decide which are the winners.

Are they watching them all right now?

Have you guys started planning for next year’s theme?

When do we get to see the videos?

Do we get to vote too? :D

Yeah there’s an audience award. ^^ Can’t wait.

The Theme

A first goodbye

This year we've added a separate award category sponsored by The Museum of Chinese in America's (MOCA) Chinatown Film Project. If you include Chinatown as location or narrative device in your film, you are eligible to be considered for the "Chinatown Award" which includes post-production services worth $3000 from Deluxe New York, a brand-new state-of -the-art post-production house.
