Most Filipinos I know can sing very well, But none of them has a voice as big and a body frame as small as Charice Pempengco. Apparently this 15-year old girl who found her stardom on youtube just taped a segment on Oprah’s show earlier this week. Charice also made an appearance on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show late last year and performed two songs. I saw this clip of her singing “And I Tell You I’m Not Going” and her voice simply blew me away. She has the voice of Whitney but the body of Britney (when Britney was 15 that is. She is probably thrice the size of Charice now).
With a voice like that, it seems the sky’s the limit for Charice since not many female singers in Asia can sing like that. She should consider following the footsteps of another Filipino Lea Salonga and perform on broadway. Can you imagine if Charice were to play “Kim” in Miss Saigon? Her thunderous voice would probably snap the cables that hang the chopper and send the 3000 lbs machine hurling onto the rice paddy field they created on stage. That would be a sight to behold.
Charice’s segment on Oprah will air on May 12. I am setting my tivo to tape this for sure. I love a girl with a big voice and a guy with a big… ah, never mind!
5/12 Update: Charice’s performance on Oprah can be seen here.
EntertainmentFilipino girls are starting to get recognized for their singing talents. American Idol had Ramiele Malubay in the top 10 this season...she probably had one of the top 3 voices on the show this year; unfortunately she lacked some experience which held her back, but if she keeps at it, she’ll be awesome.

I thought I read somewhere that she signed with an independent label, but I’m not sure which or where…
I don’t know if she has a label, but here’s her website: http://www.chariceonline.com/
this is the first time i’ve heard of her but wow! absolutely amazing. she could probably be bigger than britney or christina
yeah that’s what happened to ramielle mabuhay? she was so good too
Ramielle definitely had a great voice, but she wasn’t very original. Most of the other contestants had real performance experience (eg. singing in bands and clubs in front of real audiences), whereas Ramielle mostly sang for friends and family and maybe at school. With more experience, I definitely thought she had the talent to make the final 3, but as it was, I agreed when she got voted off…
I saw an interview of her recently on some talk show and she has a very cute personality. Everyone is going to love her when she becomes mainstream.
