This past Sunday August 17, 2008, the Kinokuniya Bookstore in New York City was holding a Cosplay Day in honor of the USA representatives for the 2008 World Cosplay Summit (the Olympics of cosplaying). Also, anyone who cosplayed received a discount on merchandise within the store. Sweet! It was honestly one of the most entertaining things I’ve done in awhile (other than AM Classic the previous day).

The event started at 10AM but I didn’t arrive till 3PM which was when the USA reps were giving their interview. Before I even walked in the store I was giggling like a little girl. I was really excited since this was my first cosplay/anime event that I’ve ever been to. The store is 3 stories and the event was held on the highest floor. It had the most amazing view of Bryant Park but that’s not important.

Attention Flimmakers!! ONE NATION competition, $50,000 in prizes

LinkTV’s One Nation Many Voices film competition returns this year with $50,000 in prizes

The competition mainly concerns Muslim-Americans, but anyone can enter. The reason I’m posting this is because I feel that the Asian American experience is very similar. There is a new category added this year that is not Muslim-specific, the “two-faiths one film” category.

If you could take a look or pass on the information, it would be greatly appreciated. It’s a chance to seriously win a lot of money. (there were only 100 or so entries last year)

$50,000 in total prizes
$20,000 for Grand Prize (aka Best Overall Video)
$ 5,000 for winner of each assignment:
60-Second Spot
The American Muslim Life
Youth Story
American Muslim Women
Two Faiths, One Film
Each Finalist will receive a FLIP camera

Five finalists will be selected for each Assignment, based on community voting. All of these finalists will also be eligible to win the Grand Prize.

60-Second Spot
Create a 60-second spot about American Muslims’ contribution to public service and/or interfaith community building.
The American Muslim Life
Produce a video no longer than five minutes on “The American Muslim Life” that portrays a unique aspect of being an American Muslim. From the thought-provoking to the hilarious, videos can be documentary, comedy, animation, drama, spoken word, or music videos.
Youth Story
Produce a video no longer than five minutes that profiles an outstanding American Muslim youth or young adult (16-25 years) with a unique story. Videos can be documentary, animation, drama, spoken word, or music videos, but the youth you profile must be a real person.
American Muslim Women
Produce a video no longer than five minutes that profiles an American Muslim woman who is taking a leadership role in her community. Think creatively and outside the box; the profile would come from fields as varied as sports, fashion, public policy, education, cuisine, technology, arts, etc. Videos can be documentary, animation, drama, spoken word, or music videos, but the woman you profile must be a real person.
Two Faiths, One Film
Co-produce a video no longer than five minutes with a friend from a different religious or spiritual tradition. The entry must portray the rewards and/or challenges of inter-religious friendships and share an example of a commonality that the friends can learn abut each other’s tradition. Videos can be documentary, animation, drama, spoken word, or music videos but the friends profile must be real people.

Koreans has been known to be the best gamers but now some would say they’re the best break dancers. According to Planet Bboy, “the Koreans on a technical level are untouchable”. One particular crew worth mentioning from Korea is the Expression dance crew. They were originally a bboy crew but supposedly now they’re a hip-hop dance theater troupe. Whatever they’re called, they’re absolutely amazing.
