Roger Fan: The Out-Takes, Part 1

Thank you, o great Gate of Rage, for enlightening us. Indeed, I am usually aware of when things are in theatres, but because I’m not “coastal” (postal?) I often have to wait till the DVD comes out.

Do any of these Asian movies make money?

That’s a good one to ask Phil, one of our admins. Some do, some don’t. Several of us, myself included, are working on creating a financially viable Asian cinema.

Oops, I meant to say Asian-AMERICAN cinema. That’s the thing....the higher-ups at the studios often don’t want Asian faces.

Ohhhh I get what you’re saying. Hey the town I live in, I often have to take a drive to another town to see an AA movie in the theaters, go to an AA festival, or also wait till it comes on dvd.

That’s great Elena that you are apart of this movement! It personally infuriates me that the “higher-ups” don’t want to see ASIAN AMERICAN male faces in big roles in movies in this country as the norm. OMG I can only imagine the frustration as an AM actor in knowing the wonderful talent that you do have that is the same or even better than a non-AM actor, but because of the “way” you look, most “higher-ups” don’t want to give you a chance. I believe a lot of it has to do with the industry being plagued by “yellow peril” even to this day and that is a crying shame. Even if a movie stars an AM it often gets swept under the carpet and it goes straight to dvd. You most likely can’t even find it in the majority of video stores so you have to order it on amazon or something. But it’s better I think to have it readily available to the general public through the theaters or in common video stores like Blockbuster or Hollywood video, etc..

That reminds me,Rick Yune has a movie due out August 22nd called “The Fifth Commandment” that he wrote, where he is a hero, the lead, and his leading woman is a latina. Check it out here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492881/ and trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05zhq7j5ZSI

I don’t know how well it will fair. I’m personally excited to see him on the big screen again. I know some people will say the role he has in this movie seems to be stereotypical. I will be checking his movie out.

Why can’t there be movies with Asians from Asia? There’s a lot of talent overseas!

Rick Yune has been relatively quiet these past few years. I loved him in Fast and Furious ^^

Maybe there should be an affirmative action for films.

Haha yeah like that’s going to happen.

Hasn’t someone raised a lawsuit or anything?

Entertainment VS Asians? lol

How long has Roger Fan been around?

His first small movie role was in Rush Hour (1998). Keep in mind that actors of all races go to auditions for years before finally landing a role. It’s just several degrees harder for Asian-American actors.

That’s not fair.

What are people doing now to change that?
