The Classics 02: Seo Taiji wa Aideul’s Nan Arayo & Majimak Chookjae

From the Tara Popp blog, by TaraPopp on 2008-10-12 04:42:00 (original link)

Mention Seo Taiji’s name to any one in Korea, and you will receive recognition for this guy.  Even my father, a caucasian male over 60, who doesn’t listen to Korean music, knows of him.  That’s how much influence this guy has on the Korean media, culture, and of course music.  He was probably the one who really revolutionise the Korean music industry.  Back then the ahjumma style music dominated the industry, but along came Seo Taiji, who brought with him rapping, the KPop dance style, and a new style of music to be included into the mainstream realm.

(more...)

Your dad is cool. lol

He came back recently.

You go girl! I love Seo Taiji’s music!

He looks like an ajumma(sp?) in that photo. hehe

Did you ever hear the Nan Arayo English Verson! LOL I have it on my mp3 player.. its hilarious. I love it though.. good memories!

I think the best is when he got more into rock and did Kyoshil Ideals and FM Business. Love hsi harder stuff. But SeoTaiji is def one of the korean groundbreaking artists that made so many others posible. Remember he was even banned from the radio a couple times in korea because of contraversal themes to his songs.

He’s so cute! He was always one of my favorite kpoppers.

@Miss.Kang—HAHA, yeah he can be <3

@Jaalin—Yeah, he did come back. XD

@Mai—LOL.  I’m glad you like his music.

@Sakura—He does?  He could look worse . . .

@Mia—There’s an English version?!  I can’t imagine it sounding any good, actually X_X;; Btw, I didn’t know his songs were banned from the radio.  But I definitely can see that happening.

@Princess—He was cute back then!  I dunno if I can say that of him now.

I don’t understand why he was banned.

@Jasmin—FROM WIKIPEDIA—

“The third album switched gears to being much more heavy metal and rock driven. The danceable tunes are nearly non-existent. Instead, songs such as the extremely controversial Gyosil Idea (교실 이데아, Classroom Idea) with an impressive death grunt backvocal by Ahn Heung-Chan (안흥찬) of Crash took center stage. Gyosil Idea was extremely critical of the Korean education system and its brainwashing of the youth of Korea. This was the first of the numerous controversies regarding Seo Tai-ji and Boys. They were accused of backwards masking Satanist messages in their songs. Although the mainstream news media later proved these accusations to be based on extremely tenuous evidence, the moral panic proved difficult to eliminate entirely.

Not backing down, Seo Tai-ji and Boys’ fourth album exploded with more controversial songs. Come Back Home was a foray into Korean gangster rap. Shidaeyugam (시대유감, “Regret of the Times") was nearly banned by the Korean Performance Ethics Committee(한 국공연윤리위원회, present is ‘한국영상물관리위원회’[Korean Video Management Committee]) for having lyrics that were considered inappropriate for youth consumption. The backlash from the fans was immense, and the system of ‘pre-censorship’(사전심의제) was abolished in July 1996, partially as a result of this.”

///// END WIKI

Considering how Korea’s pretty conservative . . . yeah I can see all that happening.  Consider Seo Taiji something akin to Eminem if you want a comparison at the level of “extremeness”.

@Mia—HOLY CRAP.  That English version really is . . . awful.  How’d they get “I Know” to “Blind Love”!?
