2009--A Year for Asian Film

From the Elena Stevenson blog, by elenastevenson on 2009-01-04 17:51:33 (original link)

Amid all the New Year’s Eve options out there, my husband and I picked a good one. While the ball was droppin’, our eyes were poppin’—at the final, climactic scene of the modern Korean classic Oldboy. Wow. We were so into it, we forgot to switch over to the TV countdown as we had planned. Will the real Asian film geek please stand up? And does this auspicious beginning to 2009 foretell a great year for Asian film?

Stephen Chow might have missed out on the Green Hornet, but he’ll full off another project so fantastically silly that that it’ll make Shaolin Soccer look realistic.

Justin Lin will achieve even more action-adventure recognition for Fast and Furious, the prequel to 2006’s Tokyo Drift.

On the coattails of this film, Sung Kang will gain more respect as an actor, and more female fans.

Ang Lee will continue to get recognition for his excellent filmmaking, but might choose something with less “O” Factor than Lust, Caution.

And Free Food For Millionaires, Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel about Korean-American NYC in the 90s, will be made into a movie….and it’s gonna make a splash. Honey, we’re talking ’bout a modern-day The Joy Luck Club. You just wait.

lol! Love your predictions!

Oldboy is such a good movie.

You just saw it? lol Supposedly they’re doing a remake.

I was really hoping Stephen Chow would do the Green Hornet.

Hopefully more Asians will get into movies this yes.

Prediction: Ninja Assassin will do well and Rain won’t be bashed anymore. lol!

ooo That’s a good one! hehe

Prediction: The economy won’t suck.

Oldboy is a awesome movie. Isnt Yu JI Tae awesome.. omg he is actually that smexyhot in person.

Sent down girl made me cry my eyes out and I couldnt believe they banned that film in china. Never forever to me wasnt the best acting.. loved the smexy part though… sorta felt bad for david innis though being not able to have babies. Its funny I actually know families like that here though with the praying and korean church on the weekends. Scary stuff.

I still need to watch Oldboy one of these days.

I’m glad you liked Oldboy Elena! Well as you said in your post I’m looking forward to the prequel to the Fast and the Furious. Free Food for Millionaires sounds really good since I’ve seen the movie Joy Luck Club. I’m also looking forward to the movie Ninja Assassin. Great picks Elena! I’ll have to bookmark these movies!

I wonder if the remake will be as good.

Mia: Is Yu Ji Tae the handsome bad guy?

SeniorForever: I’m wondering about Ninja Assassin....

Thanks, everyone, for your contributions.

I heard that Old Boy was being remade....I’m really not looking forward to many remakes of Asian movies. I cannot tell you how pissed off I was when I saw the original version of The Ring, Red Eye, and other horror movies. Why can’t they just play the original with subtitles...are American movie goers THAT illiterate/lazy/closed-minded that it would kill them to read a subtitled movie?

wait. don’t answer that. -_-

Tiffany, you brought up some good points. I agree--I don’t mind a subtitled movie. Beats the hell out of an overdub (remember Godzilla, anyone?). I don’t understand people who don’t like them.

Cons of American remakes--
1. Asian filmmakers often not given credit.
2. Shows America’s lingering racial attitudes (can’t “identify” with an Asian star, etc.)

Pros of American remakes--
1. Proves the filmmaking talent (as in, awesome plots) coming out of Asia.
2. Is giving some recognition to the Asian filmmakers who made the film great, as people go out to get the original.

Add your voice to this debate....and that’s an order, ‘cause the Screenwriting Mama told you so....
