Miyazaki Hates Modern Animation |

It goes without saying that he’s the man, but he can be a staunch traditionalist. For Spirited Away, he modeled Chihiro/Sen after a friend’s daughter, and as he explains it, the film is about a spoiled brat who has to learn how to grow up. I agree that it’s a bildungsroman (coming of age tale), but I honestly didn’t think Chihiro was spoiled… especially when she was trying to get her parents to stop eating (stealing) food. Anyhow, Miyazaki thinks most Japanese kids, noawadays, are totally spoiled and annoying. He just has a very strong sense of nostalgia (that’s what makes his work so special!), and for anyone that’s like that, the old always trumps the new. |
