Justin Lin: ‘It’s all about marketing and distribution’

“That’s why Lin’s bottom line with his self-financed latest pic, the Bruce Lee mockumentary Finishing the Game, is control of marketing and distribution. Or at least significant input. He wants to learn how it’s done; figure out how to build a network for exhibition and distribution of Asian American indie film on his own, if necessary. “That’s the next step,” he says. “It’s all about distribution and exhibition and marketing--figuring out how to do that right. That’s what the growth of the Asian American cinema is going to hinge on. I’m not worried about the talent...I’m not even worried about the money. It’s about getting people to watch these films, and proving there’s an audience.”

oo he’s the guy that filmed tokyo drift

yeah and a lot of other things. he’s one of the best asian directors

theres an audience for asian films....didn’t they see how death note turned out?

mm...i dont see how an asian being the lead would make a movie bad…

because asians are seen as lower compared to other races

sadly…

so create a marketing and distribution network. got it.

I work here.

I personally would like to see more Asian films. So what are people doing to help market and promote them?

It’s not about the movie being bad or not.  It’s more about whether or not the movie would be marketable to middle-America, where people’s exposure to Asian faces is mostly limited to martial arts masters, William Hung, and the Chinese delivery guy on Seinfield.

With stars on TV like Daniel Dae Kim and Masi Oka, I think things are changing...but it’s still a huge challenge for AA filmmakers…

Are you guys planning to do something towards this goal?

Yay, Justin. We are cheering you on. Distribution is indeed the missing puzzle piece.
