I definitely agree. It’s his own style and nowadays, it’s unique. Animation is now done in programs most of the time. It’s more convenient to use a computer (my brother is studying animation and taught me a few things) but the amazing quality Miyazaki gets from his effort is fantastic. I wouldn’t want him to change a thing.
Digital isn’t that bad. It definitely adds that extra flare but I prefer hand drawn just because I like traditional.
Control is a huge factor. Computer programs leave no challenge to the artist. If you want a 40 degree arc then you type in 40 into a tiny text box, drag the mouse across the screen, and tada it’s there. Many artists want to be able to just draw a random arc, look at it for a minute or two, and decide if perhaps it need to be rounder or not then grab an eraser and adjust pieces of the arc until they feel it’s perfect. Once that have that they want they have a nice feeling of accomplishment.
Digital is great when you scan your picture in then use the computer to color it in or enchance the original outlines or erase areas you had erased with the pencil but weren’t neatly gone.
His best movie was Princess Mononokee.
I really thought Princess Monoke was the worst of his works. Especially the villian of the squiggly line pig. I thought that character was just a lazy doodle of a drawing.
I really loved Spirited away.
His take on howls moving castle was good though.. Takuya Kimura did the best voice acting ever!
More artists should follow him.
